Yoga – A form of exercise that originated thousands of years ago in India and has been practiced continually since. You can do it for various reasons, including to maintain a healthy body and get rid of certain inabilities and diseases. It can also be used to help with meditation and relaxation.
Yoga is a popular practice worldwide. Yoga is practiced by approximately 2 billion people worldwide. A survey shows that the number of Americans who practice yoga has increased by half in the past few years, to more than 36 million. This is compared to 20.4 million in 2012. These 9 out of 10 Americans have at least heard of Yoga. One in three Americans has tried it at least once, and 15% have done Yoga within the last six months. Yoga, an ancient spiritual, physical and mental practice, originated in India. It is practiced worldwide in many forms. Yoga has been a well-known practice in India for decades. The world is now promoting Yoga and the benefits it offers.
Yoga was founded in ancient India many thousands of years before any religion or belief system. According to legend, Shiva was the first Yogi, Adiyogi, or guru. Adiyogi, thousands of years ago, shared his knowledge with seven legendary sages on the banks Lake Kantisarovar, Himalayas. It was difficult to combine all of his wisdom and knowledge into one person. These sages spread the yogic science of yoga to many parts of the globe, including Asia, North Africa and South America. India is a blessed country to have discovered the yogic system at its best.
KARMA YOGA- Also known as “Discipline Of Actions” in western culture, Karma Yoga is also known to be called “Discipline Of Actions”. This is one of four vital pathways to Yoga. This form teaches one to do one’s job without attachment to any reward or fruit. It also teaches you to be selfless and to fulfill your duty. Karma yogis are taught this main lesson. It is for those who seek spirituality and union with God. You can also apply it in your daily life by doing your duty honestly and not expecting a reward. This is the way to spiritual growth. Karma basically refers to the action we take and its repercussions.
JNANA YOGA – Also known as “Wisdom Yoga”, it is also called the “Wisdom Yoga”. This is a complex and difficult path for all. It teaches one to connect with their inner self through various mental techniques such as meditation, deep conscience mind, and self-questioning sessions. This allows an individual to distinguish between the permanent conscious world and the temporary materialistic world.
BHAKTI YOGA – Also known as ‘Spiritual and Devotional Yoga’. It is often associated with divine love, as it is the best way to achieve spiritual enlightenment through love or devotion. This path enables one to see God as the ultimate expression and embodiment love. It consists of singing praises or bhajans to the Lord, chanting his name and engaging in ritual worship and ritual.
One misconception about yoga is that we are all peaceful, lovey-dovey hippies who sing “Kumbaya” together. People think that we are a friendly bunch who accept everyone, no matter what their differences. It’s true…to a certain extent. However, there are some controversial and hot topics that yoga can bring to the forefront of our peace. These topics are not always easy to discuss, and we may not agree on everything. However, it is possible that we can debate them with so much passion and conviction that it could even sound, to the untrained ear at least, a lot like petty argument.

Yoga schools may say that you cannot eat meat while being a student of the discipline. This is because ahimsa (or non-harming) is one of the niyamas in yoga. You can’t eat meat and not harm another living thing. You can’t eat any food without causing harm to another living thing. When you go to the farmer’s market or grocery store to purchase vegetables, think about the environmental damage you are doing. I don’t think it’s a good idea to eat animal products. I am just saying that we all have a responsibility for harming in some way. Why condemn others who choose to do less harm?
Yoga and Hinduism were closely related in ancient times. Yoga philosophy still sounds very much like Buddhism to me today. Yoga is not a religion to me, unless you wish it to be. Yoga can sometimes feel a lot like worship, while other times it feels very different. It can be called whatever you like. Yoga is all about mindfulness and connection. It is great if chanting to Krishna helps one find that connection. If someone else finds that connection by banning Sanskrit or philosophy, it’s great.
