My school was the first place I started my yoga journey. We had Veda classes and Hatha Yoga asana class every morning with Guruji. Our Gur Ji was a priest cast traditional teacher. I received lessons from him for eight years. His classes were challenging and strict, and he followed the classic Hatha Yoga syllabus.

In 2007, when I arrived in Europe, I was shocked to find that Hatha Yoga was a gentle and easy form of yoga. There is also a Western version called Classical Yoga.

Hatha Yoga Definition

Sanskrit’s Hatha literally means “stubborn”. Hatha Yoga means the persistent practice of yoga without interference from the five senses. Most people view Hatha Yoga as an asana practice. It is the intense practice of pranayama and Dharana that will lead to the transcendent state of samadhi. The yogi is freed from all illusions of time, form, and space when he or she attains samadhi. Asana is only one of six practices on this path.

Hatha Yoga was a sacred and secret practice in ancient times. Only monks and priest cast male children could practice Hatha Yoga. It was considered magical and secret by the common man. Yoga practices were the subject of many mystical tales. Hatha Yoga was popularized in India during the 15th century, when monks started to perform asanas at public events. It was exposed when British photographers published photographs of monks performing dangerous poses in Western magazines at the end of 18 century.

This curiosity sparked a fascination for mystical eastern practices and made spiritual seekers in the West more curious. Many people traveled to India to learn meditation and yoga. Yoga gained popularity when Western masters taught the asanas to their students.

What to Expect from a Hatha Yoga class

Although it can seem intimidating to go to a class with so many people already familiar with the material, remember that most teachers are trained to make students feel comfortable and to help them. Once you feel comfortable, you can approach your instructor and introduce yourself to them. You might find some useful tips and they will probably give you more attention in class.

So you can understand what to expect in a Hatha Yoga class, here’s a list of some of the most common things. You don’t need to be flexible in order to practice yoga. Do not let your inability touch your toes stop you from trying.

Hatha yoga classes will begin with gentle stretching and breathing exercises that warm your muscles. Sun salutations are a great way to warm up before you can start the class. This will make it easier to hold longer poses. After you have done the warm up, the poses can be held for about 3-5 minutes each. This allows you to build muscle and allows for you to concentrate on slow, deep ujjayi breaths that are used throughout the class.

Ujjayi breathing can be used in various types of yoga. The technique involves breathing only through your nose and constricting the back part of your throat to make your breath sound like waves hitting the shore. Some people liken it to Darth Vader breathing. It slows down the airflow through your throat, allowing you to inhale and exhale as long as you wish.

Throughout the class, your instructor will be focusing on stretching all major joints, including the spine and hips. Except for classes that target a particular muscle group, most Hatha classes are a total-body workout. The class will include both standing poses as well as ground poses. Most classes start with standing poses.

Most instructors will walk around the class and talk through the poses. They will usually give both the English and Sanskrit names of each pose. Sanskrit was the original language used in Hatha yoga’s creation around four thousand years ago.

Vinyasa yoga

Think of Vinyasa (or Vinyasa flow) as one-breath-per-movement yoga. The classes are designed to seamlessly transition from one pose into another with your breath. To keep the class fresh, instructors change up their sequences every class and often play music.

Vinyasa yoga is a challenging exercise that will give you a great workout. Burns says Vinyasa yoga performs faster than Hatha yoga and is more challenging. With planks and side planks, you’ll feel more dynamic motion and resistance to bodyweight.
